2012 vintage

2012 meteor vineyard perseid cabernet sauvignon

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid is a stunning beauty. Plums, black cherries, violets, crushed rocks and smoke all burst from the glass. The 2012 is rich, concentrated also wonderfully vibrant, but the aromas and flavors remain quite primary at this stage. I can hardly wait to taste it again from bottle. There is no shortage of visceral thrill here."

2011 vintage

2011 Meteor vineyard perseid cabernet sauvignon

"Meteor's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid jumps from the glass with sweet scents of tobacco, leather, spices, dried cherries and underbrush. Intense, layered and expressive, the 2011 stands out for its balance, personality and class. Overall, the 2011 is a delicate Perseid, and the wine needs time to fully come together, but it is impressive all the same."

2010 Vintage

2010 Meteor Vineyard Perseid Cabernet Sauvignon

“Good bright, medium ruby.  Lovely aromatic nose features blackberry lifted by violet and spices.  Darker than the 2009 version and more muscular too, offering an impressive combination of power and finesse.  Very ripe black fruit flavors are perked up by juicy acidity.  Finishes with terrific grip and lingering sweetness.  Dawnine Dyer notes that 2010 produced bigger wines.  Yes, there were heat spikes in late August and late September, she said, but the harvest here didn't even start until October 10.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

“A little bit darker than the 2009, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid shares that wine's total silkiness and textural polish. Blackberries, menthol, licorice and sweet spices are all layered into the saline-infused finish. Today, the 2010 is a bit lighter than the 2009. It will be interesting to see if the wine fleshes out. Still, there is plenty of underlying structure, not to mention beauty, in the glass. Anticipated maturit 2015-2025.”

2010 Meteor Vineyard Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

“Good dark ruby-red.  Very pure aromas of cassis, violet, licorice and minerals.  Powerful and primary, with a strong mineral quality to the rich, sweet dark berry flavors.  Easier to taste today than the Perseid owing to its sheer lushness and sweetness.  But very powerful for this bottling.  The clone 7 is the source of the minerality in this wine, notes winemaker Dyer.  A great California cabernet in the making.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

“Once again, the estate's 2010 Special Family Reserve stands out for its breadth and volume. At the same time, it also hasn't spent additional time in barrel it will eventually, so the flavor profile is actually quite similar to the Perseid at this juncture. That is a fancy way of saying the two wines aren't as different today as they are likely to be in another year. Black cherries, menthol, licorice, mint, white flowers and spices all flow through to the textured, polished finish. Anticipated maturity 2015-2025.”
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate

2009 Vintage

2009 Meteor Vineyard Perseid Cabernet Sauvignon

“(700 cases made, using fruit from all three of the estate's blocks; 50% new oak):  Dark red.  Pungent aromas of red berries, minerals and loam.  Juicy, spicy and energetic, with lovely cut and lift to the berry and mineral flavors.  Long on clarity and finesse.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid is silky, polished and beautiful from the very first taste. Sweet red berries, crushed flowers, spices and mint are all beautifully layered in this utterly impeccable, gracious wine. Sweet floral notes add lift and a measure of finesse on the finish. The 2009 Perseid is just as striking today as it was last year. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025"
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate #204

“The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid comes across as rich, dark and sensual, with expressive layers of dark red fruit, flowers and licorice. It shows lovely depth and persistence from start to finish. Hints of mocha, spices and mint add layers of complexity and nuance. This is a fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.”
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate #198

2009  Meteor Vineyard Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

“Full red-ruby.  Darker aromas of blackberry, licorice and minerals.  Lush and supple on entry, then more closed and less spicy in the middle than the Perseid '09, but showing at least as much energy.  Notes of cherry and leather emerged as the wine opened in the glass.  Much more gripping on the long, building, firmly tannic finish.  The reserve is essential made of clone 7 planted in 1999 on St. George rootstock.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"Meteor's  flagship  2009  Special  Family  Reserve  is  richer  and  more  implosive  next  to  the  Perseid  Cabernet    Sauvignon I tasted alongside it. A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2009 boasts stunning depth and structure, along with equally imposing tannins. In my view, the Reserve isn't meaningfully better or more complex than the Perseid,  just  different  in  style.  Ideally,  the  2009  should  be  cellared  for  a  few  years  and  enjoyed  for the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

2008 Vintage

2008 Meteor Vineyard Perseid Cabernet Sauvignon

“Good red-ruby.  More refined on the nose than the 2007, offering redcurrant, violet and tobacco.  Then energetic and light on its feet, with subtle rock and tobacco flavors perfuming the mouth.  Rounder and more pliant than the 2007, seemingly with every bit as much extract.  Very sexy, vibrant wine.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid is a gorgeous, fleshy wine. Finessed, supple tannins frame layers of dark red fruit, spices, tobacco, flowers, leather and licorice that emerge in this impeccably polished, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2008 Perseid should continue to drink well over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate

2008 Meteor Vineyard Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

“Bright red-ruby.  Reticent but very pure nose hints at flowers, licorice and dark chocolate.  Dense and sweet on the palate, but with an almost painful impression of energy leavening the lush middle palate.  Dark berries are currently dominated by powerful rocky minerality.  This saturates the entire mouth and spreads out impressively on the very long, ripely tannic finish.  A superb example of this vineyard--and of the vibrancy of Coombsville cabernet.”
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a gorgeous wine layered with mocha, black cherries, and menthol. Warm spiced notes continue to develop in the glass as this extroverted, deeply expressive wine shows off its pedigree and class. This finish is simply striking. The 2008 Reserve will be fascinating to follow over the next decade, give or take. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020."
Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate

2007 Vintage

2007 Meteor Vineyard Perseid Cabernet Sauvignon

(a blend of Clone 7, Clone 4 and Clone 337, the last of which which general manager Jason Alexander says gives the "cabernet franc high notes"):  Medium red-ruby.  Sexy aromas of redcurrant and violet, with an ephemeral minerality that carries through onto the palate.  Juicy and spicy in the mouth, with lively acidity framing the dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors.  Not a particularly fleshy style but quite penetrating.
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Perseid (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits abundant aromas of crushed rock, charcoal, creme de cassis and subtle smoke in a ripe, full-bodied, exuberant style with terrific intensity, texture and concentration. There is not a hard edge to be found in this pure, dramatic Cabernet. It should drink well for 15 or more years."
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2007 Meteor Vineyard Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

"Good full, bright ruby-red.  Aromas of currant, tobacco and stone.  Dense and sappy, with a strong saline, rocky quality to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors.  Finishes a bit youthfully tough, with building but suave tannins.  Except for the 2006 vintage, this four-barrel lot has been entirely from Clone 7, noted general manager Alexander, who told me that the winemakers are looking for richness, minerality and firm tannins."
Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

"While there is not much made, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is an exceptional wine (100 cases produced from Clone 7). Aged 22 months in 100% new French oak, the wood component is completely concealed by the cascade of dense blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with licorice, camphor and spice box. This full-bodied, powerful, opulent wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring and should last for 25+.  Meteor’s cool climate, rocky vineyard in the Coombsville area of the southern Napa Valley is of volcanic origin."
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2006 Vintage

2006 Meteor Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

"This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville area of southern Napa exhibits an opaque purple color as well as an attractive bouquet of blue and black fruits intermixed with toasty oak, licorice, tobacco leaf, and underlying earthy notes. Impressively concentrated, medium to full-bodied, pure, textured, and long, this 2006 is approachable now, and should continue to drink well for 15 years."
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2005 Vintage

2005 Meteor Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

“Medium to dark garnet in the glass, this wine bursts from the glass with bright cherry and chocolate aromas that are followed rapidly with sweet tobacco and vanilla scents. In the mouth it is silky, even sexy, on the tongue, with a nice weight to it. The wine is juicy, with acidity that might even be slightly too sharp in comparison to the rest of the beautiful lush cherry and cedar fruits that mingle with pipe tobacco to finish with great length and satisfaction. I would expect this wine to smooth out in the next year or so in the bottle, and continue to improve for several more.“
Alder Yarrow, Vinography

2005 Meteor Vineyard Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

”Medium to dark garnet in color, this wine smells of tobacco, earth, and cocoa powder. In the mouth it displays a deeper earthy quality than the label's primary release. Nicely balanced flavors of cherry and wet earth, with hints of blue fruit, sit poised on the tongue, nicely balanced for a finish that feels like a leisurely backstroke in a placid pool, as the wine slinks and slips down the palate.”
