FROM THE CRITIC ROBERT PARKER 98+ POINTS
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Family Reserve has a dense, opaque, black/purple color, enormous extract and massive fruit, full-bodied power and stunning purity and depth. Readers are often too young to remember what some of the great classics of the late 1960s and 1970s tasted like, particularly the Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignons of 1968-1974. Well, I bought those wines, and tasting these Meteor Vineyard wines reminded me of their super-richness and almost overwhelming extract and power. This is another great achievement, but a real connoisseur's wine in that it's going to take 8-10 years to come around and last 30-40 years, if not longer.
FROM THE WINEMAKER DAWNINE DYER
Still young but showing great promise, our 2013 Special Family Reserve stands out for its remarkable finesse. On the palate it features dark chocolate notes laced with black cherries, sweet tobacco, and a hint of coffee. A wine of great complexity with a texture that is dense yet silky, rich and chewy, with an episodic heat of pink peppercorns that brings focus. A true wine for the ages.
FROM THE VINEYARD MANAGER MIKE WOLF
2013 was an exceptional year in Napa. It began with a great deal of concern because of the lack of winter rainfall. It was one of, if not the driest year since records have been kept. Early season irrigation produced healthy canopies, and the vines were in good condition during the critical bloom/fruit set period. Favorable weather conditions allowed for successful pollination, leading to a potentially very large crop. It was a long growing season, with no really significant heat waves, allowing the fruit to develop slowly and completely. Regularly scheduled fungicide applications were effective in controlling mildew, in a year of very high pressure. Meteor produced a crop somewhat above average in yields, even after significant thinning, but of truly exceptional quality. The fruit was harvested at night, on September 24th and 25th. This was a bit earlier than typical, but the early start to the growing season, and extremely favorable conditions all season long allowed ample time for optimal flavor development.
FROM THE ESTATE DIRECTOR ERIC SMITH
A standout wine from a standout vintage, this single clone shines a spotlight on what this vineyard can really produce. A singular expression of Cabernet, the Special Family Reserve shows the exotic spice, rich chocolate notes, and dark red fruit our little patch of land in Coombsville can yield. As our vines age, the wines become more and more approachable on release, and while this truly is a wine that will age for decades, a good hour + decant will give you a decadent and exciting preview of what is to come.
